About this Stay
This report introduces my stay and meals at Unzen Kyushu Hotel through photos.
Unzen Kyushu Hotel was originally established in 1917 (Taisho 6) as a Western-style hotel during the Taisho era, when Unzen flourished as a summer retreat for foreign visitors. Later, it evolved into a ryokan, incorporating traditional Japanese elements. In May 2018, after demolishing the previous structure and completing a year and a half of construction, the hotel underwent a full renovation and reopened with a refined design and modern facilities.
For this stay, I chose a plan that included two meals. This plan covers dinner and breakfast, as well as beverages and snacks in the lounge and bar room. Alcoholic drinks and soft drinks ordered during dinner in the dining room are charged separately.
For consecutive nights, I was informed that the first night’s dinner would be a Western-style course and the second night would feature a Japanese course. However, I personally requested that both dinners be Western-style courses, and the hotel kindly accommodated my request. Breakfast is selectable between Japanese and Western cuisine; I chose Japanese breakfast on the first morning and Western breakfast on the second.
The course dinners—mainly Western-style but incorporating Japanese influences—served in the dining room overlooking the dramatic steam of Unzen Jigoku, along with the Japanese and Western breakfasts, were elegantly prepared and delicious. My room featured warm wooden interiors with a sense of spaciousness, and the in-room bath, which uses natural hot spring water drawn from Unzen Jigoku, was both beautiful and impeccably clean. The lounge and bar room on the top floor provided a relaxing space, and throughout the stay, the thoughtful hospitality of the staff made the experience extremely pleasant and fulfilling.

Bedroom & Living Room
A spacious room filled with the warmth of natural wood. The large sofa and beds are very comfortable, allowing you to relax fully. With a walk-in closet, the room can be kept tidy and uncluttered. I was especially impressed by the porter who brought my luggage to the room—such polite and attentive service.
Bathroom with Hot Spring
Although the hotel does not have a public bath, each guest room has its own private bath supplied with natural hot spring water continuously drawn from Unzen Jigoku.
You can enjoy the hot spring at any time you like.
Depending on the time of day, the temperature may vary—sometimes very hot and sometimes lukewarm.
In hotter moments, you can add cold water to adjust it to your preferred temperature.
The bathroom is designed as a semi-open-air bath, separated from the terrace by glass doors, allowing you to enjoy the view of the Unzen Hell Valley directly from the bathtub.
The washroom is equipped with THANN shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and lotion.
Unzen’s sulfur hot spring is highly acidic and known for its strong antibacterial properties.
It is effective for skin conditions such as eczema, chilblains, cuts, and other dermatological issues.
It is also said to promote beautiful skin and to be beneficial for chronic rheumatism, diabetes, neuralgia, muscle pain, joint pain, fatigue recovery, and overall health improvement.
